S2004A Systems Engineer

This describes the skills and duties/responsibilities required of this position. They are arranged according to the following four categories of the employee development program at ECS.

  • Commercial—business development, estimating, strategic planning

Skills

Systems Engineers are expected to have (some of) the following skills:

Technology

  • General knowledge of industrial controls and automation, including the ability to calculate loads, specify hardware, size electrical components
  • Programming and troubleshooting of PLC equipment in general including Allen-Bradley, Modicon, GE and Siemens systems
  • Personal Computers and their application to industrial processes
  • Programming computers using high-level languages including, Basic, Visual Basic, C++, C#, Java
  • Web development, including HTML and XML
  • Relational Database design, implementation and reporting systems using tools such as SQL Express, SQL Server, and SQL Reporting services
  • Object-Oriented Program (OOP) design and methodologies
  • SCADA configuration including RSView 32, RSView Studio, CiTect, Wonderware
  • Industrial control networks including Ethernet, Controlnet, Devicenet, profibus, Remote I/O, DH+ and Modbus
  • Variable speed motor drives troubleshooting, configuration and commissioning
  • Ability to understand and analyze problem(s) using different data sources; identify possible cause and effects and make recommendations.
  • Proven ability to learn and quickly assimilate complex technology and information.
  • Exhibits desire to constantly learn and apply new technologies.
  • Stays current with technical skills and capabilities of customers; seeks opportunities to learn about new technologies and systems in anticipation of customers’ needs.
  • Exhibits desire and ability to simplify information and transfer to others

Duties and Responsibilities

Systems Engineers will lead or work on project teams as assigned by the operations manager.

Technology

  • Development of technical specifications and other technical documentation
  • Design and implementation of safe controls systems that satisfy the customers’ specifications. This will include providing hardware designs, control logic and HMI screen development
  • Securing project files against accidental loss on a daily basis by utilizing ECS Standard backup procedures
  • Supervise the start-up and installation of equipment
  • Learning about new technologies that could benefit ECS
  • Innovative Application of new and existing technology

Project Management

  • Develop practical, workable project quality plans, and then following through with implementation
  • Working as a member of a team under the direction of the project manager
  • Working as a project manager/team leader and delegating tasks to team members
  • Monitor and manage projects to ensure that they stay on schedule and under budget while fully satisfying the customers’ requirements
  • Provide accurate estimations for completion on materials and time required to complete projects and tasks
  • Work with resources external to ECS, such as sub contractors
  • Maintain customer contacts in both written and verbal forms, and recording pertinent information for future reference
  • Procure and stage materials for efficient equipment builds and installations
  • Control scope so that ECS is fairly rewarded for it’s efforts
  • Work within approved methodologies, suggesting enhancements where possible
  • Proactively provide feedback to management about the progress and status of tasks being performed

Leadership

  • Lead by example in a positive way
  • Be an advocate of the ECS Culture as detailed in the ECS handbook
  • Mentor less experienced personnel by:
  • Explaining ECS methodologies and techniques
  • Providing general guidelines for approach to delivering technical solutions
  • Teaching technologies that are not understood (either in a formal classroom environment or informally one on one)

Commercial

  • Foster and develop new and existing customer relationships
  • Evangelize ECS and its abilities

Qualifications

Bachelors Degree in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering, or Associates Degree and 5 years experience

Compensation

Salaried Exempt, eligible for performance bonuses
